I want to give you some tips of people who use new technology and media to change the world in one way or another.

Now Khan has received financial backing from Google and the Gates foundation and his videos have now received over 41 million views.

The start was small and simple but it grew into something big (even though it's still rather simple).

Changing the world in some way doesn't have to be as complicated as we might think!

Wikipedia definition of nerds:
"Nerd is a term that refers to a person who avidly pursues intellectual activities, technical or scientific endeavors, esoteric knowledge, or other obscure interests, rather than engaging in more social or conventional activities"

Nerds have changed our world in many ways. Created companies like Google, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube etc.

They are reinventing industries and siences. Some make loads of money in the process. Others have chosen to lay down their lives for a cause they really believe in. 

I just read the story about Refugees United in the latest issue of Wired Magazine UK edition. A website started by some Danes who wanted to help refugees around the world get connected with family and friends. They are actually changing the lives of lots of people through the use of web technology.

I think there are so many ideas and possibilities of how we could impact the world in a positive way. But we need people to think the thoughts and lay their time and energies on realizing them.

Our own company chose not to focus on working with corporations but with churches and non profits because we believe that these kind of organizations can become so much more effective by using the latest technology in a smart way. 

I think there are lots of people out there who have a divine calling on their lives to change the world for other people in their own nerdy way.

So... nerds rise up, the world needs you!

One of the biggest challenges today and at the same time one of the biggest opportunities when it comes to developing a website is how to reach out effectively on all the different platforms that are available.

A couple of years ago the biggest issue was creating websites that looked the same on different browsers. Internet Explorer, Firefox etc rendered many sites in totally different ways. Though this problem still exists it has become much easier in many ways due to newer version releases of the popular browsers.

Today the greatest challenge is how you can communicate on the web in an effective way both with people who visit you using a regular computer, an Iphone, an Android phone, a Symbian phone, an Ipad etc.

Different smartphones use different operating systems and different kinds of browsers and they have very different screen resolutions.

Loic Le Meur (founder of the LeWeb conference) writes in a recent blog post titled; The nightmare of developers and brands:

"It used to be simple. You just needed a website. Whatever you do on the web today, it's now a nightmare if you want to optimize your presence.

Platforms

You need to be on all popular platforms. iPhone of course, Android because it's getting huge, WIndows Phone 7 because it's now Nokia's OS, Mac, PC, Chrome OS... unsure about others frankly. Try already to be great at those six, not that easy.

App Stores

You need to be on all the above platforms stores, of course. But wait, there is more. You need to submit and manage your app to the mobile carrier app stores, they all have one. That's only a start, wait until the manufacturers themselves, the Samsung, Dell, HP and Sony have theirs, HP has one with the Palm acquisition... Even Amazon has an store for applications. Bonus startup idea of the day: create a service to help register and manage my app in all those stores in all languages, I can be your first customer."

 My thought is this. Instead of looking at challenges, let's look at opportunities.

• Never before have so many people been connected to the internet, which gives us an increased possible audience.
• The internet connected smartphones give us the opportunity to reach people when they are on the road. Lots of people use their smartphones very intensively when standing in the waiting line etc and we can be right there with them! Case in point - Lifechurch's incredibly popular Youversion Bible app for Iphones.
• In many parts of the world an internet connected smartphone might actually be the cheapest and simplest way for people to come online.
• Compared to TV and so on, reaching out effectively on the web is a really good bargain!

There are many more of course.

So, in the close future we will be looking at different tools you can use to create a good presence on as many platforms as possible.

One of those tools is Google Docs. Google Docs offers a full online office suite - including a word processor, Excel program , a very competent form builder and a PowerPoint tool. You can incorporate the forms into your website to collect data from website visitors.

Google Docs allows you to upload your Microsoft Office files and convert them to Google Docs format or download your Google Docs and save as Microsoft Office files.

You can create folders and share with other users and even collaborate on a document in real time. When you do you see the changes your team members make in realtime which is a really cool feature.

I was engaged in transferring over a church's large document base to Google Docs and then help that church migrate over to only using Google Docs for document creation. So far the responses have been mostly very positive!

So why not give it a try. All you need is to create free Google accounts and start sharing documents. It's good to plan some kind of folder structure so that you can keep things organized.
Google also offers a calendar which allows you to share your calendar with your co-workers.
